  23. Matthew 3
  24. [1] In those days John the Baptist came,
  25. preaching in the Desert of Judea  [2] and
  26. saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is
  27. near."  [3] This is he who was spoken of
  28. through the prophet Isaiah:
  29.  
  30. "A voice of one calling in the desert,
  31.  
  32. `Prepare the way for the Lord,
  33.   make straight paths for him.' "
  34.  
  35. [4] John's clothes were made of camel's hair,
  36. and he had a leather belt around his waist. His
  37. food was locusts and wild honey.  [5] People
  38. went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea
  39. and the whole region of the Jordan.
  40. [6] Confessing their sins, they were baptized
  41. by him in the Jordan River.
  42.  
  43. [7] But when he saw many of the Pharisees and
  44. Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he
  45. said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned
  46. you to flee from the coming wrath?
  47. [8] Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. 
  48. [9] And do not think you can say to yourselves,
  49. `We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that
  50. out of these stones God can raise up children for
  51. Abraham.  [10] The ax is already at the root of
  52. the trees, and every tree that does not produce
  53. good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the
  54. fire.
  55.  
  56. [11] "I baptize you with water for repentance.
  57. But after me will come one who is more
  58. powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to
  59. carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit
  60. and with fire.  [12] His winnowing fork is in
  61. his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor,
  62. gathering his wheat into the barn and burning
  63. up the chaff with unquenchable fire."
  64.  
  65. [13] Then Jesus came from Galilee to the
  66. Jordan to be baptized by John.  [14] But John
  67. tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized
  68. by you, and do you come to me?"
  69.  
  70. [15] Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is
  71. proper for us to do this to fulfill all
  72. righteousness." Then John consented.
  73.  
  74. [16] As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up
  75. out of the water. At that moment heaven was
  76. opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending
  77. like a dove and lighting on him.  [17] And a
  78. voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom
  79. I love;  with him I am well pleased."
